Nissin, the Original Instant Ramen
Witnessing a dire food shortage in Japan after WWII, an industrious businessman set out to produce a simple and affordable solution to feed the masses. Our founder, Momofuku Ando, was convinced that "Peace will come to the world when the people have enough to eat." After years of experimentation, in 1958, “Chikin Ramen” was officially released and sparked a 3-minute global revolution. For more than 60 years, Mr. Ando’s spirit of innovation continues to provide simple, nourishing delight to billions of people around the world.
Nissin in the US
On a trip to the U.S. in 1966, Momofuku Ando noticed Americans curiously eating forkfuls of noodles out of cups, instead of using bowls and chopsticks. With that simple observation, the worldwide Cup Noodles phenomenon was born. Shortly after, Nissin officially put down its roots in the U.S. In 1972, our Gardena, CA, plant started production of Top Ramen—the first instant ramen manufactured and sold in the U.S. And ever since, Nissin Foods USA has launched a continuous stream of new and innovative products for hungry, noodle-loving Americans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this cup hold up well inside a backpack without leaking or crushing?
Yes. Each 2.4 oz cup is sealed, rigid, and designed to survive drops, jostling, and the weight of other gear. We still recommend keeping it upright in your pack, but the foil lid and plastic body are built for trail conditions.
Can I really just add boiling water from a camp stove or Jetboil?
Absolutely. Any source of boiling water works: Jetboil, MSR pocket rocket, campfire kettle, or even a thermos of pre-boiled water. Pour to the fill line, cover with the lid, wait 3 minutes, stir, and eat straight from the cup.
How much does each cup weigh for backpacking meal planning?
Each sealed cup weighs about 2.4 ounces (68 grams), and the full six-pack is roughly 0.9 pounds. That makes it one of the lightest hot dinner options for thru-hikers and ultralight packers.
Does the broth stay hot long enough to enjoy at a campsite in cold weather?
Yes. The insulated foam cup holds heat for several minutes after cooking, and the sealed lid traps steam while the noodles rehydrate. For very cold nights, wrap the cup in a beanie or puffy jacket to keep it warmer longer.
Is the cup safe to eat from and to pack out after I'm done?
The cup is food-grade and BPA-free, safe to eat from directly. When you finish, you can rinse, crush, and pack it out with the rest of your trash. Many hikers also repurpose the empty cup for snacks or coffee on the next leg of the trip.
Is this a solid emergency meal to keep in my car for road trips?
Yes. It is shelf-stable for months, requires zero refrigeration, and only needs hot water, so it is one of the easiest emergency foods to stash in a trunk, glovebox, or go-bag.
Can my kids make this on a campout without me hovering?
Yes. As long as an adult handles the boiling water pour, kids can stir, time the 3 minutes, and eat from the cup. There is no open flame, no stove work, and no dishes, so it is one of the safer camp meals for children.
Is this filling enough for a hungry hiker at the end of a long day?
It is portioned as a snack or light meal, so very hungry hikers often pair it with a foil-pouch tuna, a cheese stick, or a handful of trail mix. The protein from real egg, shrimp, and pork helps it feel more substantial than a plain noodle packet.
How does this compare to Mountain House or other freeze dried backpacking meals?
Mountain House meals are heartier and more calorie-dense but cost three to four times more per serving and weigh more. Nissin Cup Noodle is the budget and ultralight option for nights when you want a hot, savory meal without the premium price.
Can I use a camp kettle for two cups at the same time?
Yes. A standard 1-liter camp kettle can comfortably rehydrate two cups back to back, which is helpful for couples or parent-kid campouts who want dinner on the table faster.
Why bother with cup noodles on a real camping trip instead of just real food?
The appeal is simplicity, weight, and cleanup. After a 12-mile day, pouring boiling water into a cup and eating it with chopsticks takes zero effort, makes zero dirty dishes, and weighs almost nothing in your pack.
Will the salty broth make me extra thirsty on the trail?
It is seasoned but not aggressively salty, and most outdoor users find it easy to pair with their normal water intake. If you are sodium-sensitive, drink an extra liter of water with the meal.
How do I prepare Nissin Cup Noodle step by step?
Step 1: Peel back the lid halfway. Step 2: Pour boiling water up to the fill line inside the cup. Step 3: Close the lid, wait 3 minutes, stir well, and enjoy. For the Original flavor only, you can also microwave the cup with water for about 3 to 4 minutes instead of using a kettle.
Can I make this in the microwave instead of with a kettle?
Yes, but only the Original flavor is officially microwaveable. Remove the lid, add water to the fill line, microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes, and let it sit for another minute before stirring. The Seafood and Curry flavors are best prepared with boiling water only.
What is the best way to enhance the flavor?
Popular add-ins include a soft-boiled egg, sliced green onion, shredded rotisserie chicken, a dash of sriracha, a slice of American cheese, or a handful of frozen peas and corn stirred in after cooking. The mild broth is a great base for extras.
Is this cup microwave-safe in a standard 700 to 1100 watt microwave?
Yes. The foam cup is designed for microwave use in standard home and office microwaves. Use the Original flavor for the best results, and stop the microwave if the broth starts to bubble over.
Does the cup fit standard cup holders and backpack side pockets?
Yes. The cup is roughly 3.5 inches wide and 4 inches tall, which fits most car cup holders, dorm mini-fridge shelves, and the side pockets of standard backpacks.
What exactly comes in the box when I order the 6-pack?
You receive one outer cardboard carton containing six individually sealed 2.4 oz foam cups. Each cup contains the noodles, the broth seasoning, and the dehydrated toppings. You do not need to buy anything else to prepare it.
Is the formula MSG-free and safe for sensitive stomachs?
Yes, this formula is MSG-free. Many buyers with sensitive stomachs use it as an easy-to-digest meal, especially when sick. As with any seasoned food, eat in moderation and pair it with water.
What is the shelf life, and how should I store the cups?
The cups are shelf-stable for many months when stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep them in the original carton, and check the date printed on the bottom of each cup for the exact best-by date.
How does cup noodle differ from regular instant ramen packets?
Cup noodle is a self-contained single serving with a built-in bowl, pre-portioned broth, and dehydrated toppings. Instant ramen packets are just the noodles and seasoning, which require your own pot, bowl, and toppings. Cup noodle is the faster, more portable option.
