Harney & Sons Fine Teas

Accepting only the exceptional, from tea garden to tea cup

In 1983, John Harney embarked on a mission to share his passion for great tea. From the first six teas we offered then, to the 300 varieties we offer today, it has been a remarkable journey.

Now, Harney's is still committed to our main purpose, providing high-quality tea that is a great value. Whether you are looking for a morning pick-me-up, a tasty mid-day treat, or a soothing cup before bed, Harney & Sons Fine Teas has the perfect blend for you.

Cheers, from our family to yours.

Product Information
The base of African Autumn, our popular herbal blend, is rooibos, a legume also known as "red bush" native to South Africa. Rooibos is oxidized, which changes the color to red, and when brewed, it looks similar to the red of "black" tea. Loaded with antioxidants, fans love the brightness of the rooibos, accented by cranberry and citrus. This is an herbal blend and contains no caffeine.

Each HT tin contains 20 tea sachets. Each sachet brews one 12 oz. cup of tea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink this rooibos tea every night as part of my wind-down ritual without affecting my sleep?

Yes, Harney & Sons African Autumn is naturally caffeine-free, making it ideal for a nightly ritual. You can brew a cup right before bed, during reading time, or after a bath without worrying about disrupting your rest.

Is this herbal tea a good alcohol alternative for stress relief in the evening?

Many wellness-focused drinkers use African Autumn as a soothing, low-calorie substitute for wine or cocktails. The rooibos base delivers a calming, slightly sweet cup that pairs well with a mindfulness routine or meditation practice.

Are the antioxidants in rooibos actually beneficial for my health routine?

Rooibos is naturally rich in antioxidants like aspalathin and nothofagin, and African Autumn builds on that with cranberry and citrus additions. It's a flavorful, zero-calorie way to support an antioxidant-focused wellness lifestyle.

Is this tea safe to drink daily while pregnant or breastfeeding?

African Autumn is caffeine-free, herbal, and contains no added stimulants, which makes it a popular choice among pregnant and nursing mothers. As always, we recommend confirming any herbal tea with your healthcare provider during pregnancy.

Will the aroma of this tea help create a calming atmosphere during yoga or meditation?

Customers frequently describe the fragrance of African Autumn as warm, slightly fruity, and pleasant before the tea is even brewed. Opening the decorative tin during a meditation or breathwork session can enhance the sensory ritual.

Is this a good self-care gift to send to a friend going through a stressful time?

Absolutely. The decorative tin, calming rooibos blend, and ready-to-brew pyramid sachets make it a thoughtful care-package item. It feels personal, premium, and useful for someone building a healthier evening routine.

How does this compare to chamomile for relaxation purposes?

While chamomile is a classic sleepy-time herb, African Autumn rooibos offers a slightly sweet, fruity, and less floral profile. Many wellness drinkers rotate between chamomile lavender and African Autumn to keep their nightly ritual interesting.

Is this gentler on the stomach than black or green tea?

Yes, rooibos is naturally low in tannins and contains no caffeine, which makes it noticeably smoother and less bitter. It's a common pick for drinkers with sensitive stomachs or those who experience acidity from traditional teas.

Can I use these sachets for a guided sleep meditation or breathwork practice?

The pyramid sachets are convenient to steep one cup at a time, which fits neatly into a 10- to 20-minute meditation or journaling session. The aroma and warmth pair naturally with slow breathing exercises.

I'm worried the tin will go stale before I finish all 20 sachets. How long does it stay fresh?

Each tin of Harney & Sons African Autumn has a 730-day shelf life, so you can comfortably work through 20 sachets at your own pace. Keeping the lid closed between uses will help preserve the delicate cranberry-citrus aroma.

Will drinking this every night get boring compared to other herbal teas?

African Autumn is part of a 19-flavor HT herbal line that includes Chamomile Lavender, Ginger Turmeric, Horchata, and Strawberry Vanilla. Many wellness drinkers build a rotation so the nightly ritual stays fresh and varied.

Is the flavor too bold if I'm used to plain chamomile before bed?

Customers describe African Autumn as light, delicate, and smooth rather than bold. The cranberry and citrus notes are gentle, making the transition from chamomile an easy one for sensitive palates.

Will this stain my teeth or mug like strong black tea does?

Because rooibos is naturally low in tannins and caffeine-free, it is far less likely to stain enamel or leave heavy residue than black tea. Rinsing the mug soon after finishing is usually enough.

I'm sensitive to caffeine — is there any chance this could still keep me awake?

African Autumn is 100% caffeine-free across the entire HT herbal line, so even highly sensitive drinkers report using it in the late evening without sleep disruption.

Does this tea support hydration as part of a daily wellness routine?

Yes, herbal rooibos counts toward your daily fluid intake and contains no calories or sugar. It's an easy way to add a warm, flavorful cup to your hydration goals throughout the day.

I don't love floral teas. Will this taste medicinal or perfumey?

African Autumn is fruit-forward with cranberry and citrus, not floral or perfumey. Drinkers who dislike chamomile or lavender often prefer this blend for that reason.

How do I brew Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos for the best flavor?

Use one pyramid sachet per 12 oz cup of freshly boiled water (212°F) and steep for 5 to 7 minutes. Rooibos is forgiving — you can extend the steep time up to 10 minutes for a stronger, more robust cup without bitterness.

Can I brew this rooibos as iced tea or sun tea?

Yes, African Autumn works beautifully as iced tea. For sun tea, place 4 to 6 sachets in a jar of cold water and let it steep in the sun for 3 to 4 hours. For quick iced tea, brew hot, then pour over ice and add a slice of lemon.

How should I store the tin to keep the sachets fresh?

Keep the lid tightly closed between uses and store the tin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong odors like spices or coffee. Stored this way, the sachets stay fresh for the full 730-day shelf life.

Is this tea compatible with cream, milk, or non-dairy alternatives?

Yes, African Autumn pairs well with dairy, oat milk, almond milk, and a splash of cream. The rooibos base is robust enough to hold up to additions without losing its cranberry-citrus character.

Is African Autumn compatible with sweeteners like honey or sugar?

Yes, but most drinkers find it sweet enough on its own. If you prefer added sweetness, honey complements the rooibos base particularly well, especially when used as a sick-day or wellness tea.

What's included in the tin when I unbox it?

Each tin contains 20 pyramid sachets of Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos. Nothing else is required to brew — just hot water and a mug. The tin itself is decorative and reusable for storage or gifting.

Is this product safe for people with common dietary restrictions?

Yes, African Autumn is naturally caffeine-free, gluten-free, and Kosher certified. It contains no calories and no added sugars, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences.

How long is the shelf life, and is it safe to drink past that date?

Each tin has a 730-day (2-year) shelf life. Rooibos doesn't really 'go bad' past that date, but for the best cranberry-citrus aroma and flavor, we recommend enjoying it within the printed window.

What's the difference between rooibos tea and regular black or green tea?

Rooibos is an herbal tisane from the African red bush plant, naturally caffeine-free and very low in tannins. Black and green tea come from the Camellia sinensis plant and contain caffeine, which gives them a more astringent, sometimes bitter profile. African Autumn delivers the body of black tea with the smoothness of an herbal.
