Harney & Sons Fine Teas
Accepting only the exceptional, from tea garden to tea cup
In 1983, John Harney embarked on a mission to share his passion for great tea. From the first six teas we offered then, to the 300 varieties we offer today, it has been a remarkable journey.
Now, Harney's is still committed to our main purpose, providing high-quality tea that is a great value. Whether you are looking for a morning pick-me-up, a tasty mid-day treat, or a soothing cup before bed, Harney & Sons Fine Teas has the perfect blend for you.
Cheers, from our family to yours.

Hot Cinnamon Sunset
Black tea with warming spices.
Product Information
The base of African Autumn, our popular herbal blend, is rooibos, a legume also known as "red bush" native to South Africa. Rooibos is oxidized, which changes the color to red, and when brewed, it looks similar to the red of "black" tea. Loaded with antioxidants, fans love the brightness of the rooibos, accented by cranberry and citrus. This is an herbal blend and contains no caffeine.
Each HT tin contains 20 tea sachets. Each sachet brews one 12 oz. cup of tea.
HT: UNIQUE & UNCOMMON TEA BLENDS A family collaboration gave rise to HT: Unique & Uncommon Tea Blends. HT is grounded in the Harney tradition of providing the finest quality full-leaf teas and herbs, all packed in a pyramid tea sachet. Frequently Asked Questions
Does the decorative tin make this ready to give as a gift without extra wrapping?
Yes, the tin arrives gift-ready with a polished, decorative finish that looks elegant on its own. Many customers add a simple ribbon for holidays or pair it with a handwritten card.
Is African Autumn a good hostess gift for dinner parties and housewarmings?
It's one of our most popular hostess picks because the rooibos blend appeals to a wide range of palates, and the reusable tin doubles as a keepsake. It's also caffeine-free, so guests of all ages and diets can enjoy it.
Can I order a 2-pack or 4-pack to give as multiple small gifts?
Yes, Harney & Sons offers African Autumn in single tins, 2-packs, and 4-packs, so you can split them into stocking stuffers, coworker thank-yous, or hostess gifts without buying one at a time.
Is this appropriate as a gift for someone who doesn't usually drink tea?
The pyramid sachets are beginner-friendly — no measuring or strainers needed — and the rooibos base is mild and naturally sweet. It's a great intro-to-tea gift for coffee drinkers or casual hosts.
Will the recipient know it's a premium brand even if they're not a tea expert?
The decorative tin, pyramid sachets, and Harney & Sons name signal quality at a glance. Even non-tea drinkers recognize it as a step above an ordinary grocery-store box.
Is this a safe, universally liked gift if I don't know the recipient's flavor preferences?
African Autumn's cranberry-citrus profile is crowd-pleasing and not polarizing. If you want extra confidence, consider the 19-flavor variety line so the recipient can sample multiple options.
How does this compare to a box of wine or flowers as a thank-you gift?
Unlike flowers, the tin lasts for years and won't wilt. Unlike wine, it's appropriate for recipients who don't drink alcohol, are pregnant, or avoid caffeine, and it leaves a more lasting impression.
Is it more thoughtful to give this than a generic grocery-store tea box?
Yes, the decorative tin, pyramid sachets, and Harney & Sons reputation position this as a curated gift rather than a pantry refill. The presentation alone signals effort and care.
I'm worried the recipient already has a lot of tea. Is this still special?
Many gifting customers report that even tea lovers don't usually have a 20-sachet decorative tin in this flavor profile. The pyramid sachets and tin presentation also make it feel like an upgrade from everyday bags.
What if the recipient prefers flavored or dessert-style teas?
Harney & Sons offers 19 herbal variants including Strawberry Vanilla, Horchata, Black Cask Bourbon, and Ginger Turmeric. Pairing African Autumn with one of these in a 2-pack makes a more personalized gift.
Is the price higher than competitors, and is it worth the splurge for a gift?
Customers consistently note that African Autumn delivers strong value despite a premium price. The full-leaf pyramid sachets, decorative tin, and brand reputation justify the cost for gifting occasions.
Can I include a gift message or have it shipped directly to the recipient?
Many retailers that carry Harney & Sons offer gift wrapping, message options, and direct shipping at checkout. Check the specific shop variant for available gift services.
Is African Autumn appropriate as a holiday or Christmas gift?
The cranberry-citrus flavor profile and red-tin aesthetic make it especially fitting for winter holidays. It's a popular stocking stuffer, hostess gift, and office Secret Santa pick.
I'm giving this to my mother-in-law. Will it look classy enough?
The decorative tin, pyramid sachets, and Harney & Sons branding all read as refined and grown-up. It's a safe, sophisticated choice for in-laws, mentors, and family elders.
Will the gift recipient be able to tell what's inside without a flavor card?
The tin is clearly labeled with the African Autumn name and ingredients, so the recipient will know the exact flavor and rooibos base right away.
Is this a good last-minute gift if I need something that ships fast?
Because it's a single tin, African Autumn is one of the quicker formats to pack and ship. Many retailers offer expedited shipping on single-tin SKUs for time-sensitive gifting.
How do I brew Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos for the best flavor?
Use one pyramid sachet per 12 oz cup of freshly boiled water (212°F) and steep for 5 to 7 minutes. Rooibos is forgiving — you can extend the steep time up to 10 minutes for a stronger, more robust cup without bitterness.
Can I brew this rooibos as iced tea or sun tea?
Yes, African Autumn works beautifully as iced tea. For sun tea, place 4 to 6 sachets in a jar of cold water and let it steep in the sun for 3 to 4 hours. For quick iced tea, brew hot, then pour over ice and add a slice of lemon.
How should I store the tin to keep the sachets fresh?
Keep the lid tightly closed between uses and store the tin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong odors like spices or coffee. Stored this way, the sachets stay fresh for the full 730-day shelf life.
Is this tea compatible with cream, milk, or non-dairy alternatives?
Yes, African Autumn pairs well with dairy, oat milk, almond milk, and a splash of cream. The rooibos base is robust enough to hold up to additions without losing its cranberry-citrus character.
Is African Autumn compatible with sweeteners like honey or sugar?
Yes, but most drinkers find it sweet enough on its own. If you prefer added sweetness, honey complements the rooibos base particularly well, especially when used as a sick-day or wellness tea.
What's included in the tin when I unbox it?
Each tin contains 20 pyramid sachets of Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos. Nothing else is required to brew — just hot water and a mug. The tin itself is decorative and reusable for storage or gifting.
Is this product safe for people with common dietary restrictions?
Yes, African Autumn is naturally caffeine-free, gluten-free, and Kosher certified. It contains no calories and no added sugars, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences.
How long is the shelf life, and is it safe to drink past that date?
Each tin has a 730-day (2-year) shelf life. Rooibos doesn't really 'go bad' past that date, but for the best cranberry-citrus aroma and flavor, we recommend enjoying it within the printed window.
What's the difference between rooibos tea and regular black or green tea?
Rooibos is an herbal tisane from the African red bush plant, naturally caffeine-free and very low in tannins. Black and green tea come from the Camellia sinensis plant and contain caffeine, which gives them a more astringent, sometimes bitter profile. African Autumn delivers the body of black tea with the smoothness of an herbal.
